Lorries rumbling to and from their base in an East Yorkshire village will soon be a scene from the past after a new housing development was unveiled this week.
For years, concerns have been raised over the amount of heavy goods traffic running through the middle of Beeford village, much of it emanating from an old transport depot, but the sounds and smell of diesel engines will soon be no more once work starts on the scheme to redevelop land at the corner of Woodhouse Lane in Main Street for private housing.
Plans drawn up by award-winning house builder, Peter Ward Homes, of Beverley, have been submitted to East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The land is earmarked as a ‘brownfield’ site and therefore fit for housing development.
Peter Ward Homes Managing Director, Peter Ward, said: “Beeford is an attractive village in the heart of East Yorkshire. The site in question has been used as a transport depot for a number of years. Before that it was a joinery works and the site of a village pub.
“Working in conjunction with the current owners of the haulage business, the plan is to relocate the existing transport yard to an alternative and more suitable site just outside the village with no loss of investment or jobs.”
He added: “We’ve spoken to a number of Beeford residents and I think it’s fair to say that most, if not all, would prefer to see any commercial activity situated outside the village centre for obvious environmental and safety reasons. Any reduction in traffic, especially heavy goods traffic, has to be a plus for any rural community”
Peter Ward Homes plan to build 13 properties at prices that are in keeping with village life. For example, a two-bedroom terrace home will cost around £100,000. Care has also been taken to enhance the street scene by including two terraces at the front of the site with four detached houses being built to reflect the style of a barn conversion at the rear.
