Members of a Goole musical theatre group are finally getting stuck into their latest community project after a local house builder came to their rescue.

Castaway, based at the Yorkshire Waterways Museum in Goole, organise events and activities for adults with a learning or physical disability and had chosen to play a part in next year’s Goole in Bloom effort.

Having been given permission by ABP to create a floral display on a corner plot at the top of Dutch River Side in the town they found nothing but hardcore. This week though, after a plea for help, house builder Peter Ward Homes organised the delivery of three tons of top soil so that work could get underway.

Carol Hodson, co-director of Castaway, said: “It seemed such a simple project but without soil there would be no display. After speaking with the Mayor of Goole, Coun. Jean Kitchen, it was suggested I speak to Peter Ward and without any hesitation the soil was on its way.”

Carol and her team are planting hyacinths, bluebells and narcissi for their spring display and plan to create a permanent display out of boxed privet in the shape of the word CASTAWAY.

Peter Ward, whose Beverley-based company has been building homes in Goole for more than 10 years, said: “It’s a good cause and they seem such a keen bunch so we were delighted to be able to help get the project started.”
