April 2008 Work starts to redevelop

Award-winning house builder Peter Ward Homes has begun work to redevelop the former Hornsea Pottery site on the southern edge of the town.

Over the next two years, the Beverley-based company plans to build 50 new homes on land which once housed the town’s most famous enterprise. Pottery produced by the Hornsea outfit was renowned for its innovative design and sold throughout the world.

The four-acre site off Marlborough Avenue has been unused since the demise of the pottery some years ago.

Following demolition of the remaining buildings, earthmovers and bricklayers are busy re-shaping the landscape, where interest among potential homebuyers is already high.

Peter Ward, managing director of Peter Ward Homes, visited the site this week to check on progress and was delighted to see the groundworks are already yielding a few surprises.

He said: “The site team has unearthed a number of items of interest, including several odd shaped bottles and pieces of pottery. These and any other items of interest will be salvaged, cleaned and put on show in the sales office. They may be nothing but curios but the site is part of the town’s commercial history so in a way such finds have a local value.”

The development will consist of a mix of house types, including two bedroom terrace, three bedroom semi detached and four bedroom homes designed in a local architectural style to reflect the character of Hornsea. Prices will range from £128,950 to £350,000.

The sales office (tel. 07970 650232) is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm.
