Beverley house builder Peter Ward Homes is to sponsor the blue ribbon show jumping event at this year’s Driffield Show.

It is the first time the company has put its name to the Open Championship, an event which invariably attracts the maximum 40 entries and which carries a first prize of £300.

The company’s founder and managing director, Peter Ward, said he was pleased to be able to support such a high profile event. He and his family have strong show jumping connections. His oldest daughter, Stephanie, was third in the international trial at Driffield three years ago while her sister, Scarlett, is a previous winner of the Show’s Junior Championship and will be competing as a senior this year.

The Driffield Show, which will be held on Wednesday 22 July, remains one of the most popular one-day agricultural events in the country and last year attracted a record attendance of 25,500.

Show secretary Cheryl Nicholson said the organisers were delighted that such a well known East Yorkshire business, especially one with connections to the show jumping world, was supporting this year’s main event.

She added: “These are difficult times but the Driffield Show remains an important event in this region’s agricultural calendar and it is very rewarding to see a local company offer its support in this way. Without the support of companies such as Peter Ward Homes and many others it would be difficult to continue to maintain such a prestigious event, an event that is synonymous with East Yorkshire’s agriculture heritage.”
